L’architecture, comme la ville, se construit sur une culture, s’élève en se
nourrissant de l’histoire. Un quartier se remplit, se stratifie, se vide, se
transforme, se métamorphose. Composer avec l’existant est une chance, voire un
atout. Il faut traquer le génie des lieux déjà là et s’en inspirer pour lui donner un
nouveau sens. Cette architecture d’adaptation, de transformation, appropriable,
c’est celle que j’ai toujours voulue : une architecture de palimpseste. Pour moi,
réhabiliter c’est embellir l’existant, c’est rendre une nouvelle jeunesse aux
bâtiments anciens, sans tricher et bien évidemment sans perdre de vue les
contraintes nouvelles. Lorsqu’il s’agit de logement, améliorer les performances
énergétiques implique aussi de construire dans la diversité, de penser le plaisir
d’habiter, de réfléchir aux besoins actuels des maisons qui grandissent ou
rétrécissent au gré des recompositions familiales, donc de rester le vecteur d’une
transformation sociale profonde.

Architecture, like a city, is built on a culture and rises and is nourished by history.
Neighborhoods saturate, stratify, empty, transform, and metamorphose.
Creating with what already exists is a unique opportunity, a powerful asset. This
architecture of adaptation, of transformation, that can be appropriated, this is
what I’ve always wanted: architectural palimpsest. For me, to rehabilitate is to
adorn the existing structure; to give a new life to old buildings without loosing
the essence, and of course, without loosing sight of new constraints. When
focusing on the other objective of architecture which is housing, improving
energy performance also implies building with diversity, keeping in mind the
pleasure of living in a home. It also implies thinking of the real needs of houses
that grow and shrink along with the blending of families, and thus these
structures remain the vector of a profound social transformation.
